Peter Navarro Convicted of Contempt of Congress
Former Trump Adviser Found Guilty of Obstructing Investigation
Washington, DC -
A jury on Thursday convicted former Trump White House trade advisor Peter Navarro of two counts of criminal contempt of Congress. The charges stem from Navarro's refusal to comply with a subpoena from the House Select Committee investigating the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Navarro, a prominent supporter of former President Donald Trump, defied the subpoena by refusing to produce documents or appear before the committee. He argued that the committee lacked legitimate authority and that his testimony could implicate him in crimes.
The jury deliberated for less than three hours before reaching a guilty verdict. Navarro faces a maximum sentence of one year in prison for each count. His sentencing is scheduled for April 5.
The conviction of Navarro sends a strong message that no one is above the law, not even former high-ranking government officials. It also serves as a warning to others who may be considering defying congressional subpoenas.
The House Select Committee continues its investigation into the January 6 attack. It is expected to issue a final report later this year.
